North Center
North Center is the geographic center is the three-way intersection of Lincoln Avenue,
Irving Park Road and Damen Avenue. Truth be told, it isn’t something that would
necessarily stick out to you on the surface; it looks a lot like many other six-way
intersections on the north side. The German and Swedish inscriptions on the cornerstones
of local churches are just about all that remain of the neighborhood's strong ethnic
beginnings. HOWEVER, North Center's good schools, long-term stability, and proximity to
transportation have made it a popular neighborhood for families.
Adding to the family-oriented infrastructure area large number of diners, and it seems
that you can’t walk a block without passing a bowling alley. Shopkeepers offering
antiques and specialty items have started a turn-around on the stretch of small
storefronts along Lincoln Avenue, from Byron to Grace streets. To the south, Roscoe
Village is becoming more and more popular, and fun bars and restaurants are becoming more
and more prevalent in the area. It’s a great spot to spend an afternoon, and an even
better one to spend the night bar-hopping.
